Gender bias in children's books

So now I'm officially annoyed. Recent research in the US into 20th century children’s literature has found a bias towards books that feature men and boys as main characters ‒ even when the characters are animals, they are usually male.

This is a disgrace. What kind of a message is this to send out to young girls? I discovered this research on a day I spent two and a half hours trying to find some strong female characters in vintage science fiction books for a piece I'm writing. And guess what? I found three out of all of the sci-fi books I am familiar with. Three.

All I can do is keep going with my own fiction for young people that always features a female lead character. And hope that other writers will do the same. This bias has got to stop.
